Dragon Magic with Snow Dragon
Types of Dragons
There are many different types of dragons. actually, too many to name here. i will mainly cover the basic dragons that you are bound to come in contact with and their characteristics and sometimes, their personalities.
i am sure you have come across pages or books, or stories that tell you many different things about dragons. I do not expect you to believe me to be the foremost expert on dragons. i would never claim that, nor would i like that title. what i write is from my own experience, which is about 5 years worth of dragon magic and many more years then that working with dragons.
now, i am sure you figure that there are more then 3 types of dragons. the terms for the most popular dragons are 'western', 'emperor' (or chinese), and Wyverns (dragons with only 2 hide legs). of course, these are just terms used to identify the most common dragons in the areas.
first, we will deal with elemental dragons; earth, water, air, fire and the rare 5th elemental dragons; the guardians and the spirit dragons. Then we will move onto color dragons, then mystery dragons (the dragons that are rarely seen or heard from, which includes the Creators).
Earth Dragons
There are many classes of earth dragons, each looking different. some of the classes are mountain, hill, tree, flower, herb, crystal, gem, stone (or rock), cave and even sand dragons. most western dragons of old were most likely mountain or stone (rock) dragons. How can you tell? well, mountain dragons get their names from where they choose to live. that would obviously be the mountains. also, they have an ability to lay amongst the rocks and mountains without being noticed, so they have a more moss green or dirt brown color. they can really be any color, but those colors are more likely. Stone dragons have harsher features, like sharp stones or rocks. They are anywhere between moss green, dirt brown and dark grey, depending on where they live. The other classes each have characteristics that are unique. tree dragons can be any color, as small as a leaf or bud, or as big as a redwood. flower dragons can be multi colored, depending on where they are found. They usually prefer the colors of the wildflowers found in the area and are usually about the size of a bee or as big as a humming bird. herb dragons are rare and are usually only drawn to the dragons blood plants. planting dragons blood in an herb garden can attract these tiny dragons, usually about the size of your pinky finger or as small as the nail on your pinky. crystal dragons are very very rare to see. they are the color of whatever crystal it is near. its body looks like uncut wild crystals that have yet to be harvested. they stay in one space for long periods of time and rarely come out of their crystal homes for anything. they can range in size from a small fragment to a large cave of crystal. gem dragons are more common then crystal dragons and herb dragons. they are usually multi colored, like the color of every gem. some of these dragons actually possess these gems and have them imbedded in their scales. they too can range in size from small fragment to large cave size. they are usually found near mines, or undiscovered gem and precious stone deposits. there have been stories that the gem dragons are the hoarders, keeping close watch on their gems, stones and gold. cave dragons are very very common. some ancient beliefs say that its the cave dragons that cause earthquakes, tho i do not see how that can be. cave dragons are rather solitary and are usually very very large dragons. they too are hoarders, and keep close watch on whatever it is they possess. when entering a cave, a cave dragon can appear as a very very large rock or earth formation. always ask permission to enter a cave. sand dragons can be anywhere there is sand, even a sandbox, tho it is highly unlikely. they are usually light yellow or gold in color and at rare times, black. black sand dragons are usually found in hawaii amongst the black sand and in other places where the sand has turned black. there are other types of earth dragons, but they are pretty rare, and arent really in the States, or Canada.
Water Dragons
the classes of water dragons go by the body of water they live in. lake, river, pond, creek, brooke, fresh water springs, waterfalls, ocean, and sea dragons are the most common and the ones we will discuss here. lake dragons are usually dirty water colored, roughly a milky green brown color. on rare occasions, they are bright multicolored dragons. lake dragons are protective by nature and like to protect the contents of the lake, so if you are fishing and find your line snapped for no reason, or an old shoe or boot attached to your hook, it may be the work of a protective lake dragon. river dragons are normally green and can be small and rounded, like frogs with wings. they hide their wings, so they can easily be spotted and disregarded as simple frogs. if you look at a frog and it stares back almost as if it understands what your are and what you are saying, that may be a river dragon. river dragons can also be pretty long and thin and look like river snakes. pond dragons are normally small, about the size of a dragon fly and can get as big as a small bird. they are commonly a burnt green or orange color. they are hard to spot and are fast swimmers. Creek dragons are usually the color of mud and are normally the size of a small lizard. they can be found deep in the mud, depending on the water level in the creek. brooke dragons have transparent wings and can jump very high out of the water. they are rare, as the number of brookes slowly decreases. they are normally light brown or dark dark green. fresh water spring dragons and hot water spring dragons are the same dragon, just different colors. fresh water spring dragons are small, and are about the color of a stone or can be almost transparent. hot water spring dragons are small, but usually transparent, or a rich red color, do to the temperature of the springs. waterfall dragons are multicolored and rare. they like to swim up the waterfall and fall back down. they look like a streak of multi colored sunlight through a waterfall. ocean and sea dragons are very similar in their size and appearance. ocean and sea dragons can range in size from small fish to bigger then a whale. ocean dragons usually take on a blue color while sea dragons take on almost a tranparent aqua color.
Air Dragons
these dragons are usually those associated with weather. the classes include cloud, tornado, storm and weather. cloud dragons usually are transparent or have a shimmery silver like color. they are constantly in flight, liking to sail in the air, tho they do rest on clouds, which, other then their cloud like appearance, gives them their name. they can tend to be rather large, tho from the ground they look relatively small. tornado dragons are dragons who like to 'ride' tornados, sand storms and other whirling storms. they are generally grey green in color and are small. though there are beliefs that these dragons cause tornados and small wind storms, that is not true. they just ride them. storm dragons are the trouble causers. though they do not create the storms, they can help cause the storms to last longer or get stronger. they are usually brown and quite big, with somewhat nasty tempers. when two storm dragons fight or mate, they can elevate storm levels. weather dragons are a class of general dragons linked to the weather, for instance, rain dragons. rain dragons are small and like to dance in the rain. an old belief says that the american indians may have been dancing for the rain dragons when performing their rain dances. that belief has not been verified. also in the weather group would be the ice dragon. they live in remote areas and only come out when the weather is cold. they are generally cold by nature, so touching one would cause frostbite. again, they do not cause the weather, though they can elevate the weather patterns. they can cause weather to get colder if out of their homes for too long. of course, they are an icey blue or white color.
Fire Dragons
there arent many classes of fire dragons. there is only fire dragons and volcano dragons. volcano dragons are named thusly because they live in volcanoes, or very very near. volcano dragons are hot by nature, so touching one would be unwise. they permeate heat from their body, so you may not get very close. they are usually the color of molten lava, which would be a burnt red, orange brown color. they do possess a tremendous temper. the more mad the volcano dragon, the hotter it gets. also beware its fire breath. not only can it breathe fire, but it can release noxious gases and even small bursts of molten breath, like shots of lava. they eat the lava rocks near the volcanoes to allow them this luxury. fire dragons are general dragons with an affinity for fire. you can find them dancing in forest fires, camp fires, even in the fire in your fireplace. thesedragons are drawn to the heat and power of fire. they are not created by fire, they just can handle the extreme temperatures of fire and love to feel the power of the untamable fire. there is a beliefe that salamanders were dragons born in fire and that they had magical properties, especially since several species of salamanders were poisionous. fire dragons range in size from the size of a match to the size of a large breed dog (great dane). their colors range from red, to yellow, to orange or even black. they usually have unique patterns on their hides, like flames or stripes of fire colors.
5th elementals
5th elementals is the name i give dragons that have something to do with spirits or divine things. to explain better, they are guardian dragons, and spirit dragons. there are more, but i will leave those for mystery dragons. guardian dragons are generally smaller in stature, tho i believe they can appear whatever size they need to be. they have transparent wings that they can easily tuck behind them. they stand on their hind legs, and can even appear to their charge in robes. they are whatever color fits them, tho they seem to prefer softer colors, such as purple, pale blue and light lime green. guardian dragons are rarely seen, but if they need to be seen, they are. they are protectors. they are told who, or what, to watch and protect, and they do so. they are not guardian angels, tho i believe that they could easily be confused. as long as you remember that their history is not like ours, and forget your history when listening or learning about theirs, there will be no communication problems. what we have learned to have happened, may not exactly be what they learned, or know, to have actually taken place. now, spirit dragons are rare to see, tho i believe their numbers are far higher then is let on. they appear as transparent puffs of smoke or mist, tho if seen in their true form, it would be a glowing silver color. they are generally large, tho they can be smaller if need be. their abilities are what makes them soul dragons. they can communicate with passed on spirits and spirits of living things that can not communicate normally (trees...etc etc). it is not as easy a thing as it seems. it is a coveted ability amongst humans, dragons and other magical beings. spirit dragons find earth bound spirits and help them find their way to where they are going. spirit dragons are powerful allies when asked to help with ghosts, spirits, or other paranormal events and/or hauntings.
Color Dragons
these dragons are defined by their colors because they are not ruled by an element. these dragons are those believed to be the most seen throughout history. they are hoarders and more is known about them then the other types i have described here. i will direct you to the View on Dragons page for the color dragon descriptions. most of the time, color dragons are referred to as metallic dragons.
Mystery Dragons
i call the dragons listed in here as mystery dragons because i am not completely sure what element they are linked to, and also, a lot of these dragons do not have any element, but are linked to other things. the classes i will discuss are faerie, elven, emperor, sun, moon, star, planet, universal, keepers of the underworld and the creators. Faerie dragons are unique in size and color. they are also highly magical and are drawn to farie magic, music and song. they are usually referred to as faerie dragons because most of the time, they can only be seen when faeries are present. it is believed that faerie dragons are a result of dragons and faeries mating, though that claim is not proven. eleven dragons are a direct result of dragons and elves mating and producing offspring. they are rare, and are group dwellers. they remain amongst each other only, since they are shunned by those who dont understand them. they are very magical and their powers are coveted by those that wish to become more powerful. they do not like their appearance, believing they are ugly. they are alight creamy blue with dragons faces and scales, but long slender, human like bodies. they do not appear in their natural form. they are gifted shape-shifters and can even appear as human as you do. the tell-tail sign is the way their voices 'sing' as they speak. emperor dragons are a bit tougher to tell about. you know them as the dragons of china, the 5 claw dragons, which are the sign of the emperor of china. i will direct you to my chinese dragon page for more on them. the heavenly body dragons (sun, moon, star, planet and universal dragons) will be talked about on a seperate page at a later time. these dragons are rarely ever seen, even by other dragons. they are the rulers of the item of its name, example being the sun dragons rules the sun. these dragons are the dragons included in the zodiac. they will then be discussed on the zodiac pages. Keepers of the underworld are dragons who guard the dragon equivalent of human heaven, purgartory and hell. these places have very specific names and the dragons who guard it are forbidden to speak them. known as the Keepers, these dragons are not allowed to leave the underworld, which, by ancient belief, is actually in the sky. The Creators is a group of dragons that are like the gods in most ancient religions. they have never been seen by any human, ever, and even most dragons do not know what they look like. these dragons are said to be all-powerful, having been the dragons that created the world (in dragon mythology....yes, they can have their own mythology).
these descriptions are based on my own personal experience and by descriptions given to me from other people's personal experiences. i used the words 'generally', 'usually' and the phrase 'said to be' because not all dragons are exactly as they are written to be. an earth dragon can be red and a cloud dragon can be blue. they vary and can be any color, shape or size. these descriptions are based on majority sightings and experience. no one is an expert on dragons, so it is hard to verify exacts when trying to list dragons properly.
There are more dragons then those listed. I have limited to no experience with some rare dragons, so i did not include them in my list. i do not like listing bits about dragons that i know nothing of, or have no one telling me their own experiences with them. this list is compiled of my own experiences and experiences of at least one hundred different people from over the last 8 years. At no time do i claim that these descriptions are 100% accurate.
i can be contacted through this group or through wiccagoddess@hotmail.com if anyone reading these pages should have any personal experience with any of the dragons listed, or with a dragon that is unlisted. i would enjoy knowing about it, so that i can widen the range in my dragon types. also, i can be contacted if anyone has any questions.
