In the time when the people where free, and when the white man was not a threat, is where my story begins. In this time we were happy. In this time there was no care but what other tribes caused for us. Mostly there was peace and happiness. The hunt was plentiful as were the herbs we gathered. The Mother and Father embraced us and we them. We were happy.
On one night when many stars fell from the sky and lit it with the flames of thier brilliance, one woman labored to give birth. The stars had begun to fall at the first start of labor and had not ceased. Many Songs was called in to help and then Bear Standing was also called. It seemed that the falling stars would be a bad omen indeed for this mother. Bear Standing, an old medicine man, didnt see it that way. He began to work in earnest calling upon his greatest magick to bring the baby out into the world and keep his mother safe. Because, he said, that this child would be his successor. He worked way into the night and into the very earliest morning and still the stars fell across the skies. Finally the baby was born a girl. She slipped out into the old medicine man's arms and began to cry. At her first wail the stars stopped falling and Father rose into the sky.
"Your name shall be Star Flame." He declared and handed her to Many Songs. He then set about to save her mother. Her mother lived also thru the night and then on to raise her till she reached her fifth summer.
Star Flame was raised then by both medicine man and medicine woman. Going to and from both lodges and learning much. She was much revered as a gifted healer at only 10 summers. The gift of healing was hers to give to anyone that needed it with only a touch. She was also a dreamer. She would know when and where the hunts would be successful and also tell which of thier enemies would be troubling them. Many lives were saved by Star Flame.
In Flame's fifteenth summer it was decided in council that she should not leave the villiage in marriage and that she should stay unwed to benifit the tribe. And so no suitors were permitted for Flame. Flame grew up happy doing what she was called by the Parents to do. Heal and be there for her people. But she was also very restricted and so prized that what normal maidens would do she was prevented from doing. Which made her wild of sorts. She was always sneeking off to do something only to be brought back by warriors sent to retrieve her.
It was on one such escape, that she met a brave by the name of Wolf Rushing. Avoiding the search party and her angry mentor, she stumbled upon Wolf while he was hunting, landing flat in his lap. In the space of minutes they were found and both taken back to meet w/ the medicine man and thier chief. Flame was sent away and Wolf was brought into council w/ both men. He was told not to think about Flame again and to leave and never come back.
Wolf left the villiage but the girl who fell into his lap weighed heavily on his mind. He realized that he couldnt live w/o her so he returned when he had rounded up a whole herd of wild horses. He came with his best friend, who helped him lead them in. Flame was gone into the mountians with the medicine man and did not see him come. Wolf was told no very firmly. And again not to come back. He kept returning. Sometimes he would send his friend and others he would come himself. Each time Flame was no where to be found. Finally on one such trip Wolf's best friend brought in three hundred horses w/ several other warrior's help and left them at the villiage. Flame was comming out of her lodge and he saw her. He immediately fell for the lovely maiden. He didnt know that it was she his friend was also trying to win. So he began to make offer for her too. He too was refused.
Wolf in desparation began to seek out Flame in secret and they fell in love. He began to ask her to plead his case to her father and the medicine man. She refused saying that they would then know they had been meeting in secret.
On a dark day when the sun was obscured in clouds, both men came to offer for Flame. And discovered that it was for the same woman they both offered. Even thru the emphatic assurances that neither would ever win her, the began to fight. Both friends now enemies squared off in the center of the village.
It was at this time that Flame returned from gathering herbs for the medicine woman. She saw the men fighting. The whole of the village surrounded them and did not notice her. Seeing her love fighting w/ knife she began running. She pushed her way thru and stood at the edge of the croud while both men taunted each other. Horrified at this she ran into the middle of them and threw herself into her love's arms, pleading w/ him to stop. The other man could not stop the downward swing of his blade. Flame knew no more in this world. She went limp and lifeless in her love's arms.
Wolf dropped to his knees holding Flame close screaming her name his whole spirit torn in two with her passing.
Flame stayed until she was called to the star road.. But she could not comfort her love. Nor, could she stop the war that insued between peaceful tribes.
When the stars fall on nights when Sister Moon hides her face, it is said that tears of Star Flame race across the skies. Tears shed for a love not fulfilled and also for a war that should never have been for the People. Listen well my little ones. To this sad story and know it's truth. Love continues always. And war is not the way.
