9. SEEING AURAS
HOW TO SEE AURAS
Seeing auras is not a difficult skill to learn. It is quite easy to see an aura. All you need to do is to learn what to look for. Mostly, it is a question of knowing what to look for. The mind, generally, is geared to clean up our visual perceptions and so it removes from consciousness those parts of visual input which are or appear to be distortions of what is there. So, it is accustomed to eliminating the auras. And, most of the time, seeing auras is only a distraction.
To get started, we need a proper environment that will allow the aura to be easily seen without other visual distractions–and, of course, an aura to look at. There are at least two parts to the aura. Some authorities divide the aura into more parts. The inner aura, a more distinct or "solid" aura, extends about three to six inches from the person's body and tends to follow the contours of the body. Beyond the inner aura is an outer aura which extends as much as three feet from the physical body and is oval in shape, with the body centered inside this oval or egg-shape.

Pets, by the way, have inner auras that are much closer to the body–extending, at best, only an inch or so from the body. My cat’s inner aura extends from its body about a half an inch.

SEEING THE INNER AURA
We shall concentrate on seeing the inner aura. The first thing you will need is a wall or backdrop that is cream-colored or light beige in color. A pure white wall will do, but very dark walls are to be rejected. You will want a wall or screen or backdrop that is free from ornamentation, pictures, designs and the like. The lighting must be subdued, nothing bright or glary, but you don't want a dim or dark room either. If your wall is white or cream in color, you will need to make sure that there is no glare being reflected toward you. Second, you need an aura to see. So you will need to find a victim, someone who will be willing to let you practice on him or her for 15 minutes or a half-hour. Hopefully, your friend will be wearing relatively plain clothes, nothing distracting or color-pattern intense. Light-colored but not pure white clothing is probably best. Also it would be helpful if the hair is not in a fancy hairdo or piled atop the head. Rather the hair should be
rather close to the head, at least on the top. A hubby or buddy who is in just his underwear and who is bald or who wears a buzz cut is ideal. But do the best you can.
Place your friend about a foot and a half or two feet away from the wall and you, yourself, take up a position about four to six feet from him or her, in a direct line to the wall behind the subject. It may help if you are seated comfortably. Now, focus your eyes at a point about two to three inches directly above your friend’s head, directly above the crown chakra or the crown of the head. Without straining, but in a relaxed way, you will become aware of a fuzziness around that head which extends around the head and is about two or three inches from the head. This "fuzziness" appears something like the waves you'll see coming from a highway on a hot day. Now, you have seen the aura. If you have difficulty seeing the aura, try looking at a point only two inches above the head or try four inches above the head.
Keeping aware of this perception, you may now scan the whole body. You will be aware of this "fuzziness" or apparent wavy distortion of the light surrounding the whole body and extending about three inches (give or take) from the body. Later, we will want to use this ability to see the inner aura for certain protective and healing techniques. And, don't worry about not seeing colors, we'll get to that.
THE APPEARANCE OF AURAS
When I've taught aura-seeing in classes, there are usually a couple of students who want to claim that the apparent aura (I use myself as the victim) around me is some sort of optical illusion. So, I will do the Armour of Light affirmation. The class becomes immediately aware of a very significant change in the appearance of my aura. And, that seems to be enough of a proof that the aura is real for even the most questioning student.
After you begin to see your friend’s aura, you may wish to ask your cooperative friend to say a prayer or to think about spiritual matters. Watch the friend’s aura carefully, particularly at the top of the head (about three inches above the head). The aura changes when one is reaching out for the Universal Source, particularly that part of the inner aura at the top of the head. You should begin to see something that looks like an inverted funnel or maybe something tube-like or rope-like, extending upwards several inches from the top of the head before it seems to fade away into the air. Maybe "inverted funnel" is an unfortunate phrase to use, but I can’t think of any better descriptive word. Nevertheless, you should be aware of something, some sort of tubular channel, extending upwards from the crown chakra when the subject is in a spiritual frame of mind.
Looking at Auras
When I'm at the theatre, before the performance begins, I often amuse myself by looking at the auras of others attending the performance. As you develop proficiency in seeing auras, you might want to try this exercise too. You will note that spiritually inspired people often have that inverted funnel bulge in their auras or something akin thereto. Those on a spiritual path usually have more well defined auras and will have that something reaching upwards from the crown chakra. Some of us, after putting on the Armour of Light, can see our own auras in a mirror.
For those who go to Mass, check out the aura of the priest, first while he is reading from Scripture or giving announcements, then when he is praying, and then again when he elevates the Host. Watching the changes in a priest's aura can be quite interesting and instructive. Comparing one priest's aura and its changes with those of other priests can be quite revealing as well. For those who attend Protestant churches, by all means, watch the changes in your minister's aura. The same applies to those on other spiritual paths who work in group ceremonies. It may take a bit of practice and experience as the lighting in churches, ashrams, temples, groves, etc., may make it more difficult to see the auras. If you have a spiritual teacher, check out your teacher's aura. A spiritual teacher will usually have a relatively bright and well-developed aura. Some of you may have attended a meeting where the leader asks you to close your eyes in prayer or meditation. But you peek and you see he has his eyes open. What do you think he's doing? If he's a true spiritual teacher, he's probably checking your auras.

Some of the New Age Children coming in now are truly gifted and see auras with no difficulty. They often are amazed when they find out that most people don’t see the auras. These young ones do need to be guarded, as well as guided and encouraged to use their powers. Importantly, they need to be cautioned not to talk about their psychic abilities to those who don’t understand. Unfortunately, many of these New Age Children do talk about their psychic experiences. And, then some unenlightened doctor decides they need to be medicated. These special children don't need drugs. Actually, drugs will tend to cut them off from their own spiritual dimension and these drugs will very well pop open their psychic doors along the spine, making them vulnerable to psychic attack or invasion. Many of these New Age Children coming in have come with spiritual purposes that they already are aware of (at least subconsciously) and they are in a hurry to get to that work.

SEEING AURIC COLORS
Most people do not see colors or hues in the auras at the start, though they may observe that sick people have fainter auras or auras that seem to be or feel a muddy darker gray. However, as you become more experienced in seeing auras, you will begin to sense colors and hues in the inner aura, perhaps even in the outer aura as well. These colors and hues will change, depending on the physical condition of the person and that person's mental and emotional state. When I say "sense colors and hues," I am being deliberately vague. Some people look directly at an aura and actually see the colors in it. Others, myself included, do not see colors there in the aura directly, but are able to sense or feel what those colors are. For myself, I can turn my head slightly down and away from the aura and sort of ask mentally what the auric colors are.
