Betta Speldens
This is one of the 'Classic' tropical fish of all time. With its splendid colouring and the large finage found on the male fish, the modern Siamese Fighter is a far cry from its ancestors found in the wild. The now legendary notation that the males will fight to the death is so well known, that even non-fishkeepers know something of this fantastic fish. Unfortunately, the male species fall prey to many fish that nip off all its fins, so be careful which fish you chose as tank mates. The Siamese Fighter will also prey on small fish and babies, so be careful of this mix too. Even though it is a short lived fish, it is an interesting and enjoyable fish to keep, especially since it is quite tamable and will feed from your hand once it is cured of its shyness.
I could not find information on the Betta as an animal totem per say but I did find a reference to fish in general. The fish is agile, mobile, sly, generally open minded, but quick to change it's mind.
The varieties of fish are plentiful in the oceans, lakes, ponds, rivers and streams of mother earth. Everywhere there is a water source you can be sure that nature has included plenty of these beautiful creatures. Some live in the deepest ocean floor and are some of the most colorful varieties of all. They make their way through coral reefs feeding on small organisms. Others like the salmon swim upstream in the rivers of the North and spawn. They were a primary food source for the ancestors who traveled and fished the bounty of nature's preserve.
If fish is you totem you will learn to navigate deeper into the waters of your heart and witness the miracles of an inner world. Perhaps for you this will be a place where you have stashed some secrets about yourself. Fish says, " pay attention to your emotions, shed a tear and don't be afraid to go deeper into yourself". Learning includes understanding that your human nature includes powerful emotions. Your emotions are like the currents of water that push you backwards or forwards depending on your mood. Never let your emotions push you down stream too far and separate you from others. Let others in on your feelings. They can help you when you feel overwhelmed.
Fish will also guide you and ask you to see that wealth and abundance is everywhere you stand. It teaches you that life is abundant and that there is no need for greed. Every experience you need arrives like a school of fish when the time is ripe and the feeding ground will be full of interesting things for you to learn from and to gather for your pleasure. Abundance comes along when you know you have enough to give. Be generous. "There is always enough for everyone", is the message of fish.
