Who your teacher and your teacher's teacher are (or were) has importance in Japan. In a traditional way, the Japanese model of learning is one of copying the example of the teacher. Thus the better your teacher is, the better you can theoretically expect to be. As a result, famous teachers are in great demand and are highly respected.
When the student has learned all the knowledge of the teacher (if that ever can happen) then the student can be assumed to have learned what is necessary.
It is because of this that you sometimes hear of Reiki lineage. When you visit a Reiki website you sometimes see information about their teachers and their teacher's teachers.
There is some truth in the idea that a student's ability and knowledge will be greater or lesser depending on his or her teacher, but lineage is not everything. In other words, "Clothes don't make the man."
Deeds are of the greatest importance. What you think, what you say and what you do are what make you a good Reiki practitioner. This applies to other practices as well - including the practice of religion, magick or any other self-development practice you can name.
