Rune Divination
Rune work is not as easy as it looks. Many people, when looking into divination systems, compare the seventy-eight cards
in the tarot deck to the twenty-four runes in the elder futhark,
and automatically lean toward the runes as the simpler choice.
And at first glance, there does appear to be less to remember and
memorize with runes. But beware-this is an illusion. The depth
of the runes is actually very immense.
A Norse Alphabet
For those unfamiliar with the runes, they are a Norse magical
alphabet, a divination system, a link to the gods, a spellcaster's
tool, a poem, and a song. They are, in short, magic.
In legend, the runes were given to the god Odin, or Wodan,
when he sacrificed himself on the world tree, Yggdrasil. In history,
there has been little hard-and-fast evidence to suggest
exactly where and when the runes evolved. Severaltheories have
been put forward but none have been proven completely. I think
this is yet another indication of the mystical quality of the runes.
All work with th~ runes takes time, focus, and energy. Understanding
and knowing the runes fully is not a task to be rushed. A
rune master once instructed me to use caution when using runes
in spellwork, for their power could not be harnessed easily. He
suggested that a spellcaster needed knowledge of all the aspects
of the rune even before attempting magic.
Today, I agree with him. And I know that the only way to
know the runes is to work with them. Divination is the best pathway
to runic knowledge. .
Finding a Rune Set
Traditionally, runes have been carved into small pieces of flat
of wood(usually yew or birch) of similar size and shape. The runic
sigils are carved into the wood and then painted red. Often
the blood of the rune maker is included in the paint, in order
to mark the runes as the user's own, and to bind them to him
or her.
When I attained my rune set, I did not follow this traditional
method. Instead, I bought twenty-four fairly flat, similar-sized
riger's-eye stones from my local science store. (I chose tiger's-eye
because it was a stone that resonated with me; but for you any
stone will do, as long as it feels right.) Then, using permanent
clver marker, I drew the sigils on each of the stones and sealed
them with clear lacquer. River stones or sea stones would
also work very well. Naturally, the color of the paint or marker is
up to you.
There are several commercial rune sets made of stones or
bone that you could easily buy. Should you choose to purchase a.
rune set, I recommend clearing it by putting it under running'
water or burying it in salt, and then charging it by setting it out in
the light of the Full Moon. (This should be done for any stones
bought in a store as well.)
After removing negativity through clearing and charging,
allow your energy to seep into the runes. Carry them around with
you in a briefcase, pocketbook, or book bag, sleep with them
under your pillow, or take one at a time and carry it in your
pocket..
. Runic Spreads
The two most commonly used runic spreads are the one-rune and
:hree-rune spreads. I will briefly describe these spreads before
explaining a more complicated, multi-rune spread.
One-Rune
The one-rune spread is excellent for quick yes-or-no questions.
The querent thinks of such a question and then reaches into the
rune bag and pulls out a rune. The querent then shows the
reader the rune and receives an answer from the reader. This is
,
also a great spread to see what kind of day you are going tc
have. As soon as you get up, pull a rune and see what the daywill
bring, generally speaking:
Three-Rune
The three-rune spread is for more detailed and involves more
questions. The querent thinks of a question and pulls three runes
out of the bag. He hands them to the rune reader who lays them
out left to right. Any three-rune reading has a relationship to the
three Norns in Norse Ipythology, so the rune reader should
understand who they are and how they function. Knowledge of
the triple god Odin-Villi-Ve is also important.
A past-present-future reading would be for the querent who
wants to know what will happen if he or she stays in a certaill
situation. The first rune would be the past rune. The second rune
would be the present rune, and the third would show the future
Ifa querent is unhappy with the outcome as depicted 1Y
the future rune, he or she might want to draw three more runes
out of the bag.
This second reading would be a situation-action-outcome
spread. This reading would be for the querent who is uncertain if
he or she should undertake a certain action. The first rune is the
querent's current situation in life. This rune will give the reader
clues about what aspect oflife the querent is concerned with-i.e
work, home, family, or love life. The second rune is the actior:
that the querent could possibly take in the future, and the third
rune is the result or consequence of that action. A situationaction-
outcome spread can be done as many times as the queren:
wants, as long as the question is different each time.
Multi-Rune
There are many different kinds of multi-rune spreads, and all o:j
them take time and knowledge to master. I recommend using th~1
first two runic spreads until you are comfortable with them an~i
with the runes. Otherwise, a multi-rune spread can be over-I
whelming.
The following multi-rune spread is one that is rarely, if eVe!;
mentioned in books. I automatically started doing it when 1
began working with the runes years ago. The concept is derived
from the bone-throwers of ancient times.
72
The querent begins by holding all twenty-four runes in hand.
The querent then thinks of a question and throws the'runes onto
the floor or table. The reader has the choice of reading the runes
as they face the querent, or as they face the reader. I usually sit
across from the querent and read them as they face me. However,
the choice is up to the individual reader and may change with
each reading.
At this point, the rune reader must read the pattern of the
runes as well as the individual sigils that fal(face up. The easiest
way to do this is to look for a path in the way the runes fell. Try to
determine the beginning of the path. Where does the eye automatically
fall, and where does it travel? Are there any runes that
have fallen off by themselves? Are there any that appear to be
blocked in by upside-down stones? Use your intuition, and start
your reading where it feels right.
Look at the way the runes fell. Is there a natural progression?
Does any way seem blocked? Allow your, eyes to blur slightly and
move over the runes toward the way of least resistance. Don't
force anything. Often the meanings of the sigils will cause you to
move in a certain way because it is obvious that they are linked.
Other times, the placement of the runes will form an obvious
stream or path. .
Once you have derived a pathway, begin with the first rune,
continuing to the next rune or grouping of runes, until you have
reached the end of the path. Each rune may be read by itself or it
may form meaning with a group of runes. Your knowledge of the
rune sigils is essential here, as is your intuition or psychic ability.
Trust yourself. If you feel that certain runes are grouped together
for a reason, then they undoubtedly are. Follow the (unes, reading
them as you go, until you reach the end of the pathway. At
that point, you should be able to formulate an overall understanding
of the. message given you by the runes.
If the querent has questions that were raised by the multirune
spread, you can follow up with a one-rune or three-rune
spread. .These will help the querent address specific concerns,
and will help him or her leave with a definite action plan.
Undoubtedly, this will also affirm the multi-rune spread, as
similar runes will continue to pop up.
Rune work is challenging. The hard-and-fast answers of the
modern wo'rld do not apply to learning the runes. However, if you
want to delve into a fascinating divination system, steeped in history,
legend, and myth, then the runes are for you. They are a
reward unto themselves.

Activatin~ Your Psychic Awareness
by Karen Follett
Psychic ability has a long history. Mud). of this history engulfed
in mysticism and secrecy. Palmists, mediums, crystal gazers,
and those who read divinatory tools have been involved in this
history since its origins. Still, while psychic ability is a part of
society, it is often viewed, unfortunately, as separate from the
mainstream, and this dictates a "those who can" versus "those who
cannot" mentality, regarding accessing the knowledge that exists
beyond ounangible world.
The Truth about Psychic Ability
While the concept of the "extraordinary" and "unique" abilIty
regarding the psychic realm is a fabulous mark~ting strategy, it is
inaccurate to think that only a "special few" people have the abilil
¥ to perceive psychic information. The ability to see, hear, feel,
and know the psychic realm is extraordinary, unique, and special.
But this ability is no more extraordinary than the ability of every
living creature on this planet to perceive the wor-Id around us.
Psychic ability, which is also known as precognition, clairvoyance,
and intuition, was gifted to our ancient ancestors by the
divine creators. The ancient's wisdom rega;ding the perception
of the oneness that exists between themselves, their universe, and
the divine opened their psychic awareness. The ancient's day-today
incorporation of spiritual beliefs into mundane existence furthered
their psychic skills and perceptions.
Since that time, eons of "evolution" have brought us into the
"civilized" world of today. Our encapsulated existence in cities,
suburbs, and housing tracts has caused us to separate ourselves
from nature. The grind of work, social and personal responsibilities,
and daily modem living all too often tend to leave us with lrttle
time to attune to the universe and it's creators. As a result of this
"evolution," we have become more accustomed to using our analytical
skills and less accustomed to tuning into our psychic skills.
Regardless of this conditioning, psychic ability remains a part
of our genetic code. "While some people seem to be more naturally
plugged into the psychic circuit, it is important to know that
the wiring is present in all of us. It just may ~eed reconnecting.
Rewritin~ Yourself for the Psychic Realm
The fact that you possess a (perhaps latent) psychic ability is the
first step in developing your psychic potential. The next step is to
ask the universe to help you reconnect y~)Urpsychic circuits.
Since we exist in a tangible, visual world, it is helpful to state
to the universe an action that will initiate your "psychic circuitry."
This action could be the visualization of flipping on a switch or
turning a dial. Or it could be an actual physical act such as anointing
or touching your third eye.
The creation of such a switch connects the physical world and
our basic selves to the spiritual world and our higher selves. The
"switch" also helps in turning off or toning down the psychic circuit
when you are in situations of psychic overload. Two tools that
are essential to aid in your reconnection to the universal "oneness"
of our ancestors are guided imagery and meditation.
Guided imagery is communicating to the universe. By imaging
a mind's eye scene with focused intent, you communicate
Of\
your desires to the universe. Utilize guided imagery to state your
intent and create the environment that will be conducive to the
second tool of meditation.
While guided imagery is communicating to the universe;
meditation is listening to the universe. Relax your body and open
your quiet mind. "Listen" to the universe and the messages that
are being sent. Open the "message centers" of seeing, hearing,
feeling, and knowing. .
Psychic communication can cpme in a variety of forms. You
may see images or symbols. You may hear words or sounds; you
may feel emotional or physical sensations. Or you may have a
"gut" feeling that just informs you of something.
Particularly in the early stages of reconnection, some of this -
communication may seem confusing or insignificant. Don't worry
about interpretations at this point, just accept the perceptions as
they are given. As mentioned before, the guided imagery and
meditation act to reunite you to the universal oneness.
Once you feel comfortable with your reestablished relationship
with the universe, you will be able to ask for and receive symbolic
interpretations of this information. You will also notice that
you can set your psychic circuit to the "comfortably on" mode,
and receive perceptions without const(~nt use of formql guided
imagery and meditation.
Psychi~ Journaling
Please note that I intentionally used the words of "constant" and
"formal" in the previous statement. Regardless of how tuned in
you become to your psychic ability, there will be times when
guided imagery and meditation are priceless.
The next step in the psychic reconnection process is to begin
a "psychic development journal." Your initial use of the journal
will be to document any perceptions that you received during the
meditation session. To begin your journal, keep your "psychic circuit"
connected and record what you visualized, heard, felt, and
suddenly knew. Again, don't analyze, but ask the universe if there
are any interpretations that it would like to send to you at this time.
After you have completed your journal entry, thank the universe
for your reconnection and close your psychic circuits. As
.-/'
tedious as it may sound, writing in your journal will prove to be an
invaluable tool, regardless of how adept you become in your
psychic development. The act of writing tends to occupy the
analytical brain and leave the the perceptive brain open to receivmg
messages.
In the end, your journal will provide tangible proof of your
progress in psychic development. You will also be able to refine
your perceptive abilities by documenting perceptions and outcomes.
Reality, both tangible and psychic, is a matter of personal perception.
The psychic messages sent from the universe are pure.
We are human. As humans we have the innate ability to take a
pure perception and alter the interpretation to meet our own
perceptions of reality (or desired reality). By documenting perceptions
and sensations noticed with your senses, you will be able
to discern a true psychic interpretation.
Keep in mind that psychic hits and misses are just a part of
life. I once read that even the psychic cream of the crop experiences
only about 80 percent accuracy. More often than not, this
80 percent reflects the most important element of the universal
reconnection process. Meaning, that since psychic perceptions
reflect a static situation in a universe that is ever flowing and
changing, there is no absolute accuracy in perception. Any action
or inaction can set the flow to alter outcome.
Psychic ability is an ever-changing gift from an ever-changing
universe. The assimilation of this concept is the last step in psychic
development. Reconnecting your "oneness" to the universe
and the acceptance of her psychic gifts will ensure that you will
flow as she flows, you will grow as she grows, and you will respect
her laws of karma and balance in the use of her gifts.
